v2.4.0: Quick Buttons

2.4.0 is out. The headline is Quick Buttons: press a Companion button without opening CyberDeck.

  • Quick Buttons. A Quick Button is a named binding to one Companion button, "Start Recording" on Studio, page 2, row 1, column 3. Once you've made one, it shows up as an action in the Shortcuts app and as a Siri phrase you can speak. On iPhone 15 Pro and later it can be bound to the Action button. The press goes out over your LAN with the app closed. No session, no launch.
  • Pick the button by tapping it. The Quick Button editor shows the live surface. Page through it with the surface's own page keys and tap the button you want.
  • One Quick Button is free. CyberDeck Pro removes the limit.
  • HTTP port per connection. A Quick Button presses through Companion's HTTP API, which is on by default and shares the web interface's port (8000). If yours runs somewhere else, set it under the connection's Advanced section.
  • A "What's new" sheet for updaters. Updating from an earlier version shows a one-time summary of what the release added. Fresh installs never see it.
  • Your data carries over. This build migrates the on-device store in place: connections, dashboards, and published roles are all still there after the update.

Quick Buttons need two things the surface doesn't: Companion's HTTP API turned on (it is by default), and the device on the same network as Companion. If a Shortcut does nothing, it's almost always one of those. The help page walks through both.

Control Center and Lock Screen controls are planned as a follow-on. For the Lock Screen today, use the Shortcuts app's own widget.

No DeckHand update this time. The pairing wire and the satellite protocol are untouched, so DeckHand 1.0 keeps working as is.

Companion 4.3+ required. iOS / iPadOS 17 or later.

Update in the App Store.
